Health Benefits of Massage

One of the immediate benefits of massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm. This occurs because massage prompts the release of endorphins, the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that produce feelings of wellbeing. Levels of stress hormones, such as adrenalin, cortisol and norepinephrine, are also reduced. Studies indicate that high levels of stress hormones impair the immune system.

Additional benefits include:

N

Reduced muscle tension

N

Stimulation of the lymphatic system

N

Increased joint mobility and flexibility

N

Heightened mental alertness

N

Improved circulation

N

Types of Massage

Relaxation Massage

This is the most common form of massage to be requested by clients.  The overall goal of a relaxation massage is to help an individual relax especially if they are experiencing excessive stress or anxiety or other symptoms.

A relaxation massage is intended to promote general relaxation and improve an individual’s comfort. It can also help decrease body tension and help one’s mental well-being.

Deep Tissue Massage

With deep tissue massage, the primary aim is to relieve severe body tension within the muscles, connective tissue and the fascia.  Deep tissue massage differs from relaxation massage in that the target is layer of muscles beneath the the top surface of muscles.  Direct, deeper pressure is applied to the muscles either following or going across the muscle fibers or tendons.

For those seeking deep tissue massage, it is recommended that continuous massage, coupled with a stretching and/or exercise regimen, and postural improvements will improve the odds for better results.
